By Claire McDonnell, CEO of the Australasian Metabolic Health Society & regular contributor to LCDU
Dr David Unwin has been a leading figure in bringing metabolic health into real-world care.
For more than a decade, Dr Unwin has been demonstrating what is possible when patients are supported to improve their metabolic health through dietary change. His work in UK general practice helped challenge long-held assumptions about the management of type 2 diabetes and has inspired clinicians around the world to rethink what is possible for patients living with chronic disease.

That impact is now being recognised well beyond the low-carbohydrate and metabolic health communities. In a recent episode of the Diary of a CEO podcast, one of the world’s most influential podcast platforms, Dr Unwin introduced millions of listeners to the concepts of insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction and the role of nutrition in addressing chronic disease. The appearance represents another important milestone in bringing metabolic health into the mainstream conversation.
For many within the Low Carb Down Under community, Dr Unwin’s message, already seen by over 2 million viewers, will be familiar. Yet seeing these ideas discussed on a global platform reaching audiences far beyond healthcare is a reminder of how far the movement has come.
A Pioneer of Practical Metabolic Medicine
As a GP working within the UK’s National Health Service, Dr Unwin became increasingly frustrated by the progression of type 2 diabetes despite standard treatment approaches.
His practice began exploring lower-carbohydrate dietary strategies and tracking outcomes. The results were remarkable. Patients experienced significant improvements in blood glucose control, reductions in medication use, weight loss and improvements in quality of life.
Over time, Dr Unwin’s work gained international recognition. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, and he has received numerous awards for innovation in diabetes care and patient-centred medicine.
Importantly, his success has never been about promoting a diet ideology. Rather, it has been about empowering patients with understandable information, practical tools and evidence-based options.

The Tipping Point for Metabolic Health?
Dr Unwin’s appearance on Diary of a CEO feels significant not simply because of the size of the audience, but because it reflects a broader shift occurring across healthcare.
Questions about insulin resistance, ultra-processed foods, obesity, type 2 diabetes and chronic disease prevention are increasingly moving from specialist conferences into mainstream discussion.
For years, the Low Carb Down Under community has advocated for addressing root causes, alongside symptom management. Today, those conversations are reaching larger audiences than ever before.
Dr David Unwin has been helping galvanise that conversation for decades. We’re thrilled to see his work reaching new audiences and look forward to warmly welcoming him back to Australia in October.
